Staff Training

OphthalmicTechnician.org and eyetec.net have online materials to jumpstart the new employee and to train the experienced assistant or technician.

For the new front desk / receptionist there is the Front Desk / Receptionist Training Course on OphthalmicTechnician.org (free access).

For the ophthalmic assistant trainee there is the Ophthalmic Assistant Basic Training Course on OpthalmicTechnician.org (free access).

After the Basic Training Course, the new ophthalmic assistant should be pointed toward becoming a certified ophthalmic assistant (COA). The assistant is eligible to take the certification exam after only one year under the supervision of an ophthalmologist.

The advantage of the certification track is that the assistant or technician will study the subject matter that will make the assistant a more productive and more efficient member of the eyecare team.  Certification will give the assistant / technician a sense of accomplishment, pride in achievement, and confidence in their abilities.  All qualities that the certified assistant / technician can help pass along to the next trainee.

Assistant trainee certification track:

1. Begin with the Ophthalmic Assistant Basic Training Course, which is designed to give a quick start to the training process.

2. Purchase an "independent study course" for the trainee to continue studying. There are two courses (books) to choose from. Completion of one of these courses is currently required for the assistant to be able to take the assistant level certification exam.

3. Sign up the assistant for the Ophthalmic Assistant Exam Prep Course, which is available on eyetec.net. This prep course gives instruction and quiz reinforcement for each of the exam content areas and sub-content areas. This course is an excellent training vehicle for the ophthalmic assistant. It provides all that is needed for the assistant to be able to pass the certification exam.

Certified Ophthalmic Assistant to Certified Ophthalmic Technician Track:

The certified assistant is eligible to take the certified technician exam after only one year as a certified assistant. The Ophthalmic Technician Exam Prep Course on eyetec.net provides all that is needed to be able to pass the certification exam. Again, the prep course is an excellent training vehicle that will give the assistant instruction and confidence in more advanced skills.
